A word from our athletics director
At UMEI Christian High School, the Lightning Athletics program is built around developing the Student-Athlete—balancing academic excellence with athletic growth. Competing in WECSSAA and OCSSAA, UMEI Lightning teams face local and provincial Christian schools, consistently remaining competitive and earning championships along the way.
Students in all grades are encouraged to participate in athletics, with academics always taking priority. Teachers and coaches work together to ensure student-athletes succeed in the classroom first and in competition second.
As representatives of UMEI, Lightning athletes are expected to demonstrate strong sportsmanship, teamwork, and Christ-centered character on and off the court. In our program, the name on the front of the jersey matters more than the name on the back.

Being part of Lightning Athletics has helped me grow in confidence and leadership while creating memories I’ll never forget. Our teams are like a big family, always supporting one another. The lessons I’ve learned on and off the court will stay with me for life.

Excellence in Sports
UMEI has built a strong tradition of athletic excellence, competing at a high level across regional and provincial competition. Our boys' and girls' teams consistently demonstrate dedication, teamwork, and sportsmanship while earning championship titles and representing the school with pride. As a smaller school, more students have the opportunity to be part of a team; in fact, nearly two-thirds of our students participate in athletics each year. At UMEI, all students are encouraged to grow as athletes, teammates, and leaders as part of our commitment to educating the whole person.

Growing in Character, Health, and Leadership Through Athletics
Character and Faith Development.
Students learn valuable life lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and integrity, while experiencing how faith and personal values can guide their actions both on and off the field. Participation in sports encourages reflection on ethical choices, fosters respect for others, and builds a foundation for lifelong moral character.
Physical and Mental Well-Being.
Participation in athletics promotes not only physical fitness but also mental resilience. Students discover how regular activity, proper nutrition, rest, and healthy habits contribute to overall wellness, while also learning strategies to manage stress, stay focused, and maintain a positive mindset in all areas of life.
Collaboration and Leadership Skills.
Being part of a team develops essential communication, cooperation, and leadership abilities. Students gain experience motivating and supporting others, navigating challenges together, and taking initiative, all of which prepare them to work effectively with peers and lead with confidence in school, sports, and beyond.
