Trips & Retreats

Education That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Ottawa.avif

The average UMEI student goes on 40+ trips over their four years of high school.

At UMEI Christian High School, we believe students learn best through experiences. That’s why, as a school, we prioritize off-campus education through a variety of trips and retreats.  It is because of our small size that we have flexibility to incorporate so many trips within each student’s education.  What’s more is, thanks to our active Student Parliament, many students fundraise 100% of their trip expenses!

Trips at UMEI are more than just fun—they bring you closer as a group. Whether it’s choir or class trips, you build friendships, grow in confidence, and create memories that stay with you.

Trips are one of the best parts of UMEI. You grow closer as a class, try new things, and come back more confident—not just as a student, but as a person.

Learning, Growing, and making memories for a lifetime.

End of Year Off-Campus Education Trips

Each year, all students participate in off-campus educational trips. While the focus is academic enrichment, the experience extends far beyond museums and landmarks. Students develop practical life skills such as navigating public transit, budgeting, teamwork, and time management — all within a structured, supervised environment.

The typical trip structure is:

  • Grade 9 – Silver Lake Mennonite Camp (3 days)

  • Grades 10 & 11 – Ottawa or Toronto (alternating years, 4 days)

  • Grade 12 – Chicago (4 days)

Trip destinations may vary depending on opportunities and circumstances. In recent years, the entire school has traveled together to destinations such as New York City, Washington, D.C., and the Alberta Rockies.

Vocal Choir Trips

Students in Grades 9–12 may enroll in Vocal Choir as a credit course, which includes a variety of performance and enrichment opportunities throughout the year. Choir students participate in events such as the Mennonite Schools Council Music Festival, the Ontario Christian High School Choral Festival, Windsor MusicFest, and performances connected with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.

Additional appearances include local churches, long-term care homes, and Chamber of Commerce events, providing students with meaningful opportunities to share their music within the broader community.

Athletics Trips

In addition to regular league travel, UMEI teams compete in OCSSAA tournaments alongside other Christian schools. These weekend events provide valuable opportunities for team bonding, exploring new communities, and strengthening mentorship across grade levels within our athletic program.

Service Project Days

Twice per year, students travel to different local service organizations and volunteer for the day. These days are built into a UMEI education as part of living out our Christian faith and being the hands and feet of Jesus.

Robotics Trips

Students on the Lightning Robotics Team compete across Ontario — and potentially internationally — in the FIRST Tech Challenge and FIRST Robotics Competition. Events are hosted at leading venues such as the University of Waterloo, the University of Windsor, and FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton.

Extracurricular Club Trips

UMEI’s many clubs participate in field trips throughout the year, extending learning beyond the classroom. The Agriculture Club attends the Royal Winter Fair and the Woodstock Farm Show, while Faith in Action travels to Windsor, Detroit, and Toronto to better understand issues such as homelessness and poverty and explore ways to serve others. Additional clubs take part in a variety of local and provincial experiences, including cultural events such as Cirque du Soleil.

Course Subject Trips

Teachers at UMEI find ways to build trips into their curricular learning.  Some examples include:

  • Functions: learning how to model sinusoidal functions by visiting local windmills

  • Physics: learning about velocity by visiting the local toboggan hill

  • Senior English classes taking in a Shakespeare play in Stratford

  • Recreation and Leadership hosting elementary school tournaments

  • Grade 9 Science: Aerial Exploration over Essex County

  • Grade 10 History: visiting local historic sites

  • Hospitality & Tourism: visiting local restaurants and chef kitchens

  • Senior classes: learning more about truth & reconciliation by visiting Caldwell First Nation
